Wondering how people would feel about looking after a dog with a disability

Hi all, I am new to trusted house sitters and was looking for some advice. I have 3 gorgeous miniature Dachshunds, 2 boys 1 girl all brothers and sisters. We have always been very anxious to leave our dogs with anyone and have never done so in the past but we have some big life events happening in the next couple of years so feel like now is the time to start building some relationships with sitters.
Was wondering how the sitter community would feel about looking after my dogs as Lily unfortunately got IVDD last year and now relies on using wheels to go for walks. She does have movement in her back legs and gets around our downstairs on her own in her own way but she does require support in the garden and needs to be carried up and down stairs and lifted on and off the sofa. She absolutely loves life and nothing stands in her way we would just need a sitter willing to give her that bit extra help and attention. Is this something people would be open to do? I live in the Northumberland area

I would pet sit your Lily and her siblings in a heartbeat :hugs:. Every time I see a doggie with a set of wheels, living their best lives, I just want to hug them and mind them.
I am absolutely sure I am not the only one.

If you lived anywhere near me, I would watch your dogs. We had two dachshunds and the oldest got hit by a car. We nursed her back to a version of her former self but she had brain injury and was always a special needs dog after that. She lived an additional 13 wonderful years getting plenty of hugs and kisses.

I completely agree with you. So wonderful that dogs with disabilities can get around on wheels.

Hi @Kate93 we looked after two highly engaging pugs in Zug earlier his year who were super elderly and Isabella had a trolley (& diapers) for her back legs following surgery 5 years previously. They lived on the second floor of a town apartment & had to be carried one by one (chubby little ladies) up and down the stairs. It was one of our favourite sits of 31! You will definitely find sitters that will be a fit.:raised_hands:t3:

That is her face when she’s bum shuffled to her dinner and is very happy with herself at 15 and a half :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I will once I’ve created a profile  I didn’t want to join fully until I had asked the question as had been turned away from another house sitting site as they had no one suitable for lily, it’s encouraging to see that people would genuinely be interested in looking after my dogs, giving me hope that I could actually find someone

You’re doing the right thing. When and if you are ready to publish a listing, don’t hesitate to ask for guidance. We’ll help you with selecting the best pictures, writing a « winning » description to make sure you attract the perfect sitters.
We have a massive sweet spot for little pupstars with disabilities and usually can’t touch them when they are walking, but if we were to take care of them, then we could cuddle them all the time, once the wheels were off.

Welcome @Kate93 as you can see there are plenty of sitters who will look after a dog like Lily.

Trusted House Sitters is about mutual exchange so you also need to think about what you home and location has to offer to your sitter .

Are there local attractions ? Will the responsibilities involved in caring for your pets leave the sitter enough time to visit these ?
Would your sit be great for a family or maybe suit someone who works from home ? In which case , can you offer accommodation for a family or good wi-if and office space to a sitter who works from home ?

One way to help to reduce this anxiety is to think ahead about what might happen and have a plan in place for example : who could be an emergency contact for the sitter if an emergency arose during the sit ?

Also you need to make arrangements for the payment of vet bills if any of your pets needed emergency medical treat during the stay . If you think about these ahead of time , you will have peace of mind that any emergency is covered .

You can also ask you sitter to provide daily updates and photos of your pets during their stay - most sitters are happy to do this . This will provide you with reassurance.

There are some sitters that do repeat sits and others that like to travel and visit new places each time - so if this is important to you,
you can include it in your listing.

All other key sit elements equal, there’s no reason I wouldn’t sit a disabled dog. I had one that was old, blind, deaf and he needed help getting up and down steps or furniture and required extra caution, because he’d had back surgery. His fellow pet had also previously had back surgery. Both of them were super sweet.

We’re sitters, it wouldn’t put us off, we love seeing dogs on wheels, they seem so happy and full of life! We sat a dachs that needed lifting up and down from the sofa, but that was due to the breed and due to old age.

We, like a number of sitters on this site, have a soft spot for ones that need more attention and TLC in comparison to others, we feel compelled to help care for them .
