Cakes Of The World

I highly recommend trying Sacher -Torte when in Vienna, a rich chocolate cake with a signature layer of apricot jam. The Sacher Hotel is very beautiful too.

Haha @anon47943759 Red velvet is my favourite cake, but I did not see the small print or get the Holland references at first

Whilst recently staying at the Grandhotel Pupp, in Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic we discovered the very delicious Pupp Cake at their Café Pupp. It is prepared according to the original recipe of the founder of the Pupp dynasty and the famous confectioner Johan Georg, and apparently its secret is Becherovka which is a traditional herbal liqueur that has been produced in Karlovy Vary according to a secret recipe since 1807.

Does anyone else have any delicious cakes that you have discovered whilst on your travels?

Many layered Doberge ‘created’ by Beulah Ledner of New Orleans. I grew up in New Orleans and this is what my brother and I always wanted as birthday cake. But as my birthday is at the end of March I sometimes ended up with a Passover cake made with potato flour (very dry as I recall). A few New Orleans bakeries sell them on goldbelly but $100+.

We discovered these delicious Kolach sweet pastries whilst in the Czech Republic. A Kolach from the Czech and Slovak koláč meaning cake/pie is a type of sweet pastry that holds a portion of fruit surrounded by puffy yeast dough. Common filling flavours include tvaroh which is a type of cottage cheese, fruit jam, poppy seeds, or povidla which is a prune jam. They are yummy!:yum:

Has anyone else tried these before?

Today I treated myself to a “French Cake” from the local artisan bakery, currently owned by a fifth-generation baker, who uses 120-year-old Scotch ovens and traditional techniques and recipes handed down each generation in his family.

@Shannon I just visited the Café Sacher in the Sacher Hotel in Vienna and tried the Sacher-Torte and the original Sacher-chocolate parfait and I have to admit although I do like the Sacher-Torte, I actually preferred the Sacher-chocolate parfait, much lighter and not so rich! :slightly_smiling_face:

The Sacher-Torte is on the left and the Sacher-chocolate parfait is on the right.

Looks good and a few calories lighter! Coming from the girl that has just got back from ‘morning tea’ - obligatory custom in NZ  and had the most amazing ginger cake. Forgot to take photos though .

I had never heard of this cake until today. Šakotis or Tree Cake, which is a traditional Lithuanian spit cake, and does resemble an actual tree. This a traditional dessert made from butter, egg whites and yolks, flour, sugar, and cream, which is cooked on a rotating spit. They are traditionally eaten at family gatherings, especially at Christmas and Easter.
