Excellent. Thanks much for this article, @geoff.hom. I just checked and Boichik Bagels delivers nationwide. I’ll put in an order when I get home soon.
Whilst we are on the subject of bread, does anyone remember the popular 1970’s TV advert for Hovis bread?
This is a video I took when we visited Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, a steep, picturesque street made famous by the Hovis bread advert.
Both look gorgeous, I have made sourdough in my dutch oven in my AGA last year, it was great, I also made a easy bread in there too, I was a bit dubious as it was a YT video I had never seen, however it was pretty good for no kneed bread. Enjoy and Happy Sitting
Thank you for this post - it has inspired me! One if the things o miss as a full time sitter is having all my kitchen equipment and ingredients to hand so I’ve given up baking, but looking at these I’ve realised you don’t need much to make bread, so I’m going to give it a go!
Love all the recommendations and links
As they say, to travel is to learn. I had never heard of Blaa until we visited Waterford in Ireland.
Waterford is famous for its Blaa, a soft white bread roll, that has a long connection to the city and county. It’s said by the locals that there isn’t a Blaa to be found in Waterford after midday. This affectionate anecdote reflects the fact this every day favourite in Waterford is the quintessential morning product, filled with crispy bacon, sausages and whatever other goodies you fancy in your Blaa!
I tried mine with eggs and mushrooms at No 9 Cafe, Waterford and it was delicious! I highly recommend you to try Blaa if you happen to visit Waterford.
@Samox24 - Now that looks delicious!
It’s so funny how names come about … I wonder how they came up with Blaa?
Hi @Therese apparently modern Waterford bakers now believe the name ‘Blaa’ was corrupted from Huguenot words ‘Blaad’ which is an old French word for flour, or ‘Blanc’ which is a French word meaning white, which refers to the rolls unique floury appearance.
@DMcat Oh WOW! These breads are amazing
Im going to be in San Francisco in the second half of November. Id love a lesson and it would be fun to meet someone from THS.
Beautiful!
@DMcat OMG they look too good to actually eat though
Ugh! We fly out on November 14! November 12 could work if you are here then. @AnnaM
@PVGemini, you could give lessons via streaming video if you wanted to, even from a sit potentially. At various jobs I’ve had, we’d hire chefs, bartenders, craftspeople and others to give lessons for team bonding and morale purposes. We did it by video for telecommuters. We even streamed yoga lessons.
Stunning! Too good to eat (almost)
Thanks for the encouragement. Do you put the veggies on after the bread rises?
Anna
I won’t be. Where are you going? I home somewhere fun. Are you in SF proper? I’ll be in Sonoma after I leave the city.
Probably either some grandma’s expression or other family member’s comment to Gma’s cooking.
I love bread and everything about it.
Started making my own, like many during the pandemic. It was wonderfully therapeutic and meditative.
I would make several loaves and varieties, gave them away and froze them. In some places I’ve traveled to like Spain, my diet would be bread, local cheeses, herbs, tomatoes and red wine.
It’s a struggle I know. (Sigh)
I know this gentleman in his 70’s, full time wanderer who travels mainland US in his truck. He makes his own bread in a Dutch oven by campfire.
He is a very happy man.
@PVGemini I found this great article on CNN Travel of 50 of the world’s best breads… I have certainly found a few of my favourites on here!
