How long to wait for confirmation

We had a video meet on Tuesday which went well but the HO had a concern about how often we might be gone during the day. By Thursday evening we had not heard anything and the listing was still active so we applied for a repeat sit for the same time period and were immediately accepted. When we cancelled our first application they seemed suprised. I had thought about reaching out to them first but that seemed like hassling them if they had not confirmed and the listing was still active 48 hrs after the meet. Now I wonder if I should have handled this differently?

Nothing wrong with your approach. Their surprise was based on their assumption that you’d automatically wait for them, which is entitled or naive thinking. Maybe they’ll learn or maybe they won’t. Either way, their monkeys, not yours. Enjoy your sit with the prompt hosts.

They weren’t sure you were the right sitter for them. They were probably speaking to other sitters. That’s all fine, but they don’t get to ‘hold’ your availability until they make their mind up either way.

You haven’t done anything wrong.

I only want to do sits where the HO is 100% happy that I am the right person.

No, you handled it perfect, you did the right thing. I wouldn’t have reached out first, you wouldn’t have gained anything apart from another day or two of them possibly keeping you on the back burner while they video chat with others, to see if there was anyone that was there more during the day.

When we remove an application, we also pop a message to the owners saying we’ve been accepted for another sit, and so we’re removing our application, just so owners realise they need to act fast.

However, we would also prompt them at the end of a video chat, to say they “need to officially accept us on the THS system, so that it’s set in stone, so do that tonight if possible”, because they need to do it fast. But maybe that didn’t seem appropriate for you at the time, with them having concerns.

You did the right thing, you found owners that really wanted you without hesitation, and they’ll go on to find their perfect sitter.

They hesitated and missed out - their loss, not yours

Bravo. Hosts didn’t confirm right away because they might have been looking for a better candidate, busy, or who knows. What you did was teach them that sitters have choices too.

You did the right thing.

Always do sits with partners that want you and aren’t afraid to commit to you.

You did nothing wrong! They had expressed concern over how long you would be gone during the day, so it was best to move on and do a repeat sit you already know. No need to settle or wait around when there are other great sits!

You did nothing wrong.
You did what they would have done if they would choose another instead of you:
Accept/ confirm the other offer and cancel this one.

You did the right thing. I’m a HO and sent a confirmation to a sitter after our video call. They left me hanging for a week. A couple days went by then a text message asking for something. A few more days went by and another question on something else. So finally after a week of this, I told them if I didn’t hear back from them the next day, I was cancelling the confirmation. I didn’t hear back so I canceled. They sent a text about blah, blah, blah.

So, I learned that on my video call, I ask if I were to offer the sit to you, how long would it take to make a decision? My 3 sits since that one, all have said immediately.
