Hello everyone, It’s great to see so many of you have reached out to help the OP.
@Silversitters @richten1 gave some helpful advice about whether it aligns with the T&Cs and reaching out to Membership Services, as they are best placed to help answer any questions.
There have been a couple of flagged posts on this topic, so just to help remind everyone that opposing views are completely fine and are what makes the world go around, but please keep it in line with our kindness and respect guidelines.
Also as the thread has gone off topic of ‘listing requesting ID and running credit check’. To make sure that the OP gets as much help as possible for their original question, please keep the thread on topic.
If you use the spyglass there have been a few discussions about how members feel about the mutual exchange aspect of the platform, or please feel free to start a new topic if you can’t find one you want to contribute to.
We always appreciate any member who takes the time to report any listings or profiles that they feel do not meet the site terms of use. Membership Services are always on hand to help.
Thank you and happy weekend
Ok, I hadn’t thought about the risk to sitters. Maybe everyone should have a DBS check? I don’t know. If we stay in a b&b or airbnb we don’t know anything about the homeowner. I assume everyone’s like me on this site and maybe they’re not.
They don’t “check” the references. Sitters setting up accounts get links they can send to people they want to use as references. I don’t know how much they verify anything those people say. The sitter can’t remove those references, but the sitter does control who gets the links. For that reason – the references could be your mom for example – a lot of people are dismissive of outside references. As pet parent, however, I’ve found them useful. At least someone known to the sitter is willing to vouch for them. Sometimes they are clearly more character references than petsitting references, and that has a place as well.
THS also does some kind of identity check but I don’t know what that entails. In the US, they do a criminal background check which is a check of public records to see if someone has a criminal history. This does not, however, prove that someone is not a terrible human, lying about pet experience, terrible tenant history – noncriminal, etc.
This is why reviews, outside links, etc are so important, as is simply meeting with the sitter online to make sure that what you see and hear seems to match the profile. You can also ask the sitter questions to get an idea of their thinking or judgement.
The actual checking is done by the company Evident (evidentid dot com).
They check that the number of the ID is real etcetera. I guess that the most important thing is that it stops a member from opening a new account.
This has been asked so many times on the forum. Did you get a pop-up before you posted the question with links? Anyway, here’s one such response:
