Location is that a big factor?

Hi, we live on a wee island on the west coast of Scotland - it’s remote (ferry or plane ride from the mainland) we only have 650 people living on the island during winter and the storms can be pretty fierce, though beautiful.

Would this deter sitters from applying - especially if the booking is for December and for a month?

Thank you

Inge

It might be ideal for someone writing a novel or wanting some introspection, or walks in the storm and rain!
I wouldn’t apply for it myself, but I’m sure you’d get more than a few applications

I think every sitter’s situation is different but for us it wouldn’t be practical because we live in Spain and always drive to our sits in the EU.
Surely you could find someone who wouldn’t mind the slight complication and additional cost in getting to you. Best of luck!

We would definitely do it if it is a nice, tidy, clean house and a dog.

For some sitters the location would be ideal. For me it would depend on the home and pets in the listing as well.

It may be a good idea to build in a bit of flexibility at the beginning and end of the sit to allow for difficulties arriving and leaving the island due to the Winter weather.

I appreciate you can only do that if you have the room to accommodate the sitters. Good Luck

It would deter many. But I remember with fondness a stay on the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog when we got stuck because of a blizzard. The ferry could not get through the ice for the rest of that week.

As many have said, it might not suit many but there may be some out there who are interested, all you can do is try. If I were you I would be very clear & upfront in your listing about the weather conditions & the remote location, and suggest how it’s possible to get to the island. I would also write how you expect sitters to get around - will you leave your car or will they need a hire car or ferry car transfer and will you pay for that etc, as that can be really expensive!

I visited Tiree briefly on my way and from Col for the basking sharks festival a few years ago. A December sit would certainly be an experience for someone.

Great suggestion, thank you will do.

Thank you for your suggestion and yes, I’ve added a few extra days on either side of our listing to accommodate weather etc. the joys of Scottish winters.

hi Maria and Mike - you would have the undying love from a Samoyed, lab cross and two kittens ;o). sourdough loaves/cinnamon buns on arrival and a clean tidy house in the most beautiful of islands.

Definitely wouldn’t deter me and visiting your beautiful island and others really appeals. Remote and a great location, scenery beats a city stay everytime.

Please do apply if the dates suit you (December). Thank you

Another thought - definitely list what amenities & services are available on the island and what’s in the township - shops, pharmacy, doctor, vet, etc etc, so sitters know how accessible things are or if they would have to go back to the mainland for any of these things - that’s something I would wonder about!

Sincerely I am of the opinion that if this is for this December, you need to post straight away.
Your ideal sitter is most likely looking now.
Feature all the highlights.
Just the few mentioned sounds wonderful
Best wishes

Very tempted, but i’ve already been approached by a previous sit for Christmas. If that falls through i’ll apply
