New icons for pets in listings

  1. I prefered the old icons which were clear and precise. 2) I am wondering what are THS’s priorities? The concern seems to be trivial matters, while – according to user reports – more and more HOs are unable to find sitters, and sitters are leaving the platform due to new fees. And the 5-applicant rule, criticized by both HOs and sitters, remains in place.

@BeckyOnTheHill I totally agree with you. The new pet icons remind me of cartoons and so childish but perhaps it’s a reflection of the age of those entrusted to develop the “new improvements”! So many more important issues that have been raised over the years by members but all we get are forced changes that did not need to be made, and, in most cases, have made it more difficult to navigate rather than a smooth experience.

I agree, the cat one is particularly terrible, it’s the easiest most iconic symbol… yet they’ve made it tricky to see what it is, when there’s a cat one by itself, it could be a cat, dog, hamster, mouse, it’s only when it’s teamed with a dog that I can quickly tell the difference.

They’ve made it like an airbnb wifi symbol… but that’s followed by the word WIFI to reveal what it is.

It’s like THS don’t realise how many sitters look at those symbols before clicking through. The old ones were fine, it was totally clear to understand what those icons were.

It’s symptomatic of THS, the focus is on increasing membership above everything else. This makes them look more attractive to potential buyers in the next few years.

I think the new icons look too much alike. I had to look hard to see if a cat or a dog. There is a saying in the US, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”

Until I read your post I didn’t realise pet icons had changed, probably because I haven’t been looking for a sit for a while. I agree with you and others, this was not something that needed to be changed when we’ve been asking for so many other things that do need to be improved of brought in. Grrrrrrr, it makes me so angry

Hi everyone,

Thanks for sharing your feedback about the new pet icons.

I’ve passed it over to the team. If there’s any information I can bring back to you, I’ll pop a reply here.

Jenny

Yes indeed. For the love of God will THS stop tinkering around with things that really don’t need fixing and focus on the more important concerns that so many of us have raised repeatedly - yet THS seems to do very little about?

I’d genuinely like to know how many users actually complained that they couldn’t interpret the previous pet icons. On what basis did THS decide these needed changing? And how many hours - and how much money - were spent designing, developing and implementing this change?

As someone with neurodivergent-related differences in information processing, I found the previous icons far easier to scan and process quickly when searching for sits. With these new icons, I can noticeably feel that my brain has to work harder to distinguish between them, and it is taking me longer to do something that was previously quick, easy and effortless. Gee, thanks THS! I imagine the change could also create additional difficulties for people with visual impairments.

Why change something that was already working perfectly well?

Honestly, THS, I just don’t get you anymore!

I agree 100% with your sentiment regarding THS. too much time and effort spent on useless changes. that often make things worse. Plus, they don’t listen to requests for changes from members. There’s simply no engagement and just a “we know best” .attitude.

I don’t like the new icons either.

What they prioritise-The home page picture changed from a cheerful lady and a dog walking on a beautiful beach to a seamingly bored dog in a dark room.

The app icon- made it dark green (I like the original colour)

In the meantime suggestions are being ignored.

Your increased fees at work…

They change things that are easy to make them *bright and shiny* while, in actuality, they changes are either useless, pedantic, superfluous or confusing.

How about addressing some of the REAL (and often longstanding) problems ?

I agree with all of the above. In addition, looking at the curved silhouette, the long neck-like sweep, and the snout shape resembles, at first glance, more of a horse or donkey than a cat. Once you see the profile of a horse or a donkey, it is hard to unsee it. And a horse or donkey is what I see each time I see the image.

Yes I agree, , fix the stuff that needs fixing.

The new icons were an impotent change. Yes, I meant to use that word.

Cory Doctrow coined a word that perfectly describes the process that THS is now going through.

Hey now, all y’all complaining here… it’s OK, These Are Your Booking Fees At Work!! I bet they paid a very highly qualified focus group to discuss and evaluate professional graphic artists’ designs

Srsly tho… I have just seen the icons for the first time and my first thought was that they look much alike. On my phone app they are the old icons (?, but I have an older app version that won’t update). On the browser page on the phone, they are the new ones. The livestock and dog icons might be confused. If you didn’t have excellent vision and were on a small screen I could imagine these might be harder to see.
Everyone’s already said what I was scrolling down to say. Particularly @SeniorSitter1’s “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it”, which is exactly what I was going to say.

And if it is broke, just give it some lip service and say, " We value your input and we’ll take …errrr… we’ll look at…errr …ummmm… "

I see the icons have been rolled back to the previous versions (on Android phone app at least)
(BTW, I thought the new cat icon looked like a unicorn with a really small horn)

Which version of the app do you have? I have 3.33.0 on my Android with the new icons, no update available when I checked. Thanks
