Hello forum,

Anyone who would take a moment to share posts on doing a THsit and/or living abroad in Portugal from the States would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I work with international companies, some based in Portugal and Iā€™ve considered moving there. For visiting, I hear nothing but positive. For moving, I hear really really really mixed feedback. Lots of groups to join to get inside input from an expat perspective.

We did a lovely dog sit for some THS members in Coimbra last year. Both Americans who had moved there a few years before because it was so cheap and the healthcare was great/cheap/free compared to staying in the USA. One of them was very sick and in ICU for a long time and not one euro of cost for his treatment because they had bought a property. Portugal is a great country, Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Algarve etc are places weā€™ve been so far and loved. Could probably connect you to them if itā€™s useful @HelloOutThere - DM me if so and will find a contact number for you. #sixdegreesandallthat

Hi @HelloOutThere
There is also a Facebook group ā€˜Americans living in portugalā€™ which would be a great source of information. Iā€™m not American, so not part of that group, (there are many) ā€¦ but I live in Portugal (outside Lisbon) and the large expat communities in all areas are all very friendly and willing to help. The Portuguese people are also very nice. The application processes for everything, is slow and needs lots of time and patience, but everything works well once you are set up.
If I can help in any further way, please feel free to DM me.

I donā€™t know about living in Portugal but as someone that spent nearly 2 months (Porto, Lisbon and Albufeira) there over the last year I do love the culture and food. Although I do gather (from a friend) that parts of central and north Portugal can be rural and remote.

Hey @lou28 Iā€™m a bit internet weary, so if you have a known source for a group, Iā€™d appreciate it.

At some point, Iā€™ll internet infoā€¦but with this community of world experience, itā€™s my first go to :slightly_smiling_face:

So Portugal listings go fast even for homes I"ve favorited.

Having that experience of gone or into review as soon as I get the notification.

Itā€™s not a barrier to our planning but I can appreciate the ā€œawwwā€¦bummerā€ of it.

The FB group that @Therese mentioned is a good one. And that will lead to others that the members suggest. Iā€™ve looked at half a dozen and Iā€™m a member of three, each with different perspectives and feedback.

I get the social media weariness, but itā€™s not required that you post in the groups. In fact itā€™s encouraged that you read & listen for a while so the same questions donā€™t get asked repeatedly. Iā€™ve definitely learned more about moving to Portugal from those groups than any media reports or articles.

There are websites to compare the cost of living (along with other factors) in various cities throughout the world. Pretty interesting. I like one called The Earth Awaits. Very inspiring!
