Sitter no show

I was all set to meet with my sitter today and she was a no show. Hours went by and no call to explain what was up It’s been crickets…

I tried the number she gave me but no answer goes right to voice mail. Later I had another pet sitter request, then again crickets
I leave in the morning so can’t wait on a sitter. I feel I was scammed… and want it reported

Was it a confirmed sit, with welcome guide etc. I ask because another sitter wouldn’t have been able to contact you as the dates wouldn’t be available to anyone else until cancelled. The best thing is to always have an emergency plan, I expect you will have to probably pay someone local. Also contact TH to see if they can help.

Yes, if you want to report it, report it. But not in the forum. What can we do? We are sitters and owners.

I am sorry you have been let down. You can and I think you should report it to THS [https://support.trustedhousesitters.com/]
But only if you are both members of THS and have this sitting confirmed on the site. It sounds as though this might no be the case because, as @Chrissy has said, the system makes it impossible for other sitters to “request” a sitting if it has been already confirmed.

Hi @SuzKnobel - Something is not quite right with the situation as you describe it. It feels as if we need more specific details to be able to comment on your post.

What do you mean by " I was all set to meet with my sitter today"? Was the sit due to start today? had you arranged to meet before the official start of the sit? Have you invited this sitter to sit, and they have confirmed that they will - all officially through the THS site?

This comment is also confusing --“I had another pet sitter request, then again crickets” Was this also through the THS site? It will have been impossible for a second sitter to send you an application if you have already confirmed a sitter?

Time and again on here, pet parents write angrily about sitters who have cancelled or let them down, and it turns out that sits haven’t actually been officially confirmed. This case, unfortunately, sounds like another of those, especially since the OP mentions:

Unless the sit was actually confirmed via the offering and acceptance via THS @SuzKnobel, there’s nothing to report. Unless you are a bit more explicit about the facts of the matter, it’s difficult for anyone to offer any advice.

What does ‘crickets’ mean?

I
“Crickets” means silence, no response, etc.

@SuzKnobel - when you say “meet with my sitter” do you mean have an initial visit (phone/video/in person) to see if the sit is a good fit for both of you?

Hi @SuzKnobel,

It’s “crickets” from your side, regarding the questions from @Chrissy @Newpetlover @Colin @happypets:

So please tell us:
Did the sitter really confirm?

If yes, would really love to know how another sitter manage to send a request? Or contact you as houseowner, despite not having an active application.

Thanks for the answer.

Hope your confirmed sitter didn’t have an accident or something bad happened?

And hope you found a solution for the petcare?

Thanks, @Lassie and @1MA. Such good practice for my English. Theory and practice in a couple of posts! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Hi @Smiley. Just to expand on @Lassie’s definition, a crickets sound effect is often used in TV shows or movies when there is an (uncomfortable) silence or gap in conversation. I used to have it on a phone app.

Tumbleweed is another analogy.
We are getting off topic
Hopefully the OP will get back to us with regard to whether it was a confirmed sit or not.

Am just going to add that the crickets :cricket: here are far from silent right now!:rofl: #cacophonyspringstomind (sorry, off topic)

As in “the thread is dead but keeps rolling” ? I
’m enjoying the language learning opportunity and I’m more hopeful of getting this question answered than hearing from OP, even though it’s totally off topic.
Thanks.

I have also had this problem this year- 2 sitters making a commitment and then changing their mind. It was difficult to get a sitter—. I finally did get another confirmation and I’m pretty sure it will stick. I have a back up plan just in case. I hate to say it think some of the people signing up as sitters are flakey, some are homeless and signing up to cover their options for a place to land, but then get something else.

Hello @delaneyh1, welcome to the forum.

Do you mean making a **mutual ** commitment? That’s not nice at all. But if both parties were looking for options, then I think it is totally legitimate.

Even if they were, I don’t think that would increase the chances of them canceling a sitting or withdrawing an application. IMHO, reliability has nothing to do with owning a home. If there were some kind of relationship between those two facts I would say it would work in the opposite direction: the more you need a place to stay, the more anxious you will be to fulfill your commitments, go the extra mile and even accept unreasonable tasks.

Apologies, totally off topic!

I had never heard of ‘crickets’
What does crickets and tumbleweeds mean?

In its most recent extended use, ‘crickets’ has become a word for “silence.” Over time, crickets became an image used not just in writing but cinematic shorthand for quiet country locations, sometimes used to stand for a generalized sense of open emptiness. (Tumbleweeds is also sometimes used in this figurative way).

Who knew? Every day is a school day

@delaneyh1

You used the word ‘commitment’ first , then ‘confirmation’ later which is confusing .

When you say that 2 sitters made a commitment , do you mean 2 sitters confirmed to sit for you officially in the THS site or just that they said something in a message or video call that made you think they wanted to sit for you?
