What are you watching?

I watched Heartstopper S2. This is such a sweet and positive series, I really enjoy it

This was a very nice article about season 1 and this is a review of season 2

Oooh, do i detect a fellow ancient history addict @Crookie? Ancient Rome is my particular passion; novels, films, TV, my degree (so long ago it’s virtually contemporaneous with ancient history), just anything about ancient Romans

Montalbano amuses me a lot. I don’t watch it properly but friends are fans so I humour them. As I have lived in Italy for nearly 20 years, the subtitles are hilarious. Characters are asked a question and reply with a long sentence with lots of info and the subtitle says ā€œnoā€

@Saltrams being Australian, I just love the old stuff as our white history is only 250 years old (our indigenous history is the oldest in the world at 60,000+ years old). When we were on our grand UK adventure this year we were blown away with the age of things. A 250 year old building was new architecture! I’m a UK royal nerd, particularly War of the Roses and Tudor periods. I got my royal on well and truly in the UK. I do love the ancient Roman connections there, as well as the viking history. We see ourselves as being from British stock from our grandparents but we are probably also Italian and Nordic!

Oh the irony @Crookie. The grass is always greener. I’d discard it all for the chance to live in Oz!
Glad you enjoy the Brit/European heritage. Have you done your DNA? I used Ancestry.co.uk and found my small element of Germanic, Nordic heritage. It’s fascinating!

I speak/understand Italian passably well and I also noticed some discrepancies with the subtitles, mainly cultural references. But in general the subtitles seem quite okay. I love the settings in Sicily that are used in the series. I also look forward to reading the books in English translation.

I probably noticed a few silly occasions @cat.tails and just extrapolated for comedic effect . Like I said, I haven’t actually watched the programme properly!

Inspector Montalano’s definitely worth watching, very good plotlines and twists if you like that sort of thing. Sort oflike an Italian version of Morse, Endeavour, or Lewis - detective series set in a scenic, small town surrounded by beautiful countryside!

As I am catsitting in a home where they subscribe to disney+ channel, I started to watch The Bear S1 - it’s interesting but tbh… I’m not sure why it got such rave reviews and was/is so popular. It is like watching reality TV I think? Anyway, I would never eat anything that came out of that kitchen, some of the staff have really dirty hands & fingernails and I’m not sure about the general cleanliness - the main chef keeps running his hands thrught his oily hair and I never see him wash his hands before he goes back to prepping food - ewww!

I also started to watch Good Omens S1 on prime. Also interesting but I’m not mad keen on it. I’m guessing it appeals to fans of Pratchett and Gaiman’s book. Good cast, that’s for sure.

Watching ā€˜Not Dead Yet’ which is quirky, funny, and thought provoking at the same time. An obituary writer, can see and speak with the folks whose obituary she is writing. I’m watching on Disney+ but my daughter watched it on Hulu sometime ago.

Also just started Hijack on Apple…jury is out in this one :woman_shrugging:

Oooh this looks very interesting and right up my alley.
I’m originally from Guatemala the land of volcanoes :volcano:

I actually LOVED this show. Perhaps a lot has to do with being from Chicago and being a foodie. And also having worked in the service industry before and knowing a lot of people who do it (and now are very successful chefs/bartenders). Season 2 is so much better IMO. But season 1 was good, it really shows you the nitty gritty of it all and high stress of trying to save a family owned business that’s falling apart, mainly due to bad management, addiction and personal family issues.

Ever watched Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations show on the travel channel?
Or Parts Unknown on CNN? Anyway, believe it or not a lot of places in the world (specially 3rd world countries) are not up to proper health inspection standards, and unfortunately a lot of small places like the ā€œoriginal beefā€ in that show are more common than we think specially during and even after the pandemic. I know it’s gross and it’s how people who there get sick right? Sometimes we eat at delicious places without realizing that sometime people touch their hair and prepare our food.

Going to see Barbie tmrrw. No spoilers!

I get what you’re saying. I’m a foodie and I love hygiene in kitchens :kissing_closed_eyes: I kept watching The Bear and I liked it the more I watched of it. Maybe S1 was more of a rundown kitchen and they were trying to raise the standards and cleanliness etc in that season’s storyline. By S2 I was not thinking about the clenanliness (or lack of it). Also, I realise now that the character with the dirtiest fingernails was not involved in food preparation.

I spent a lot of time living in Indonesia and Singapore where I ate at a huge variety of places ranging from hawkers and street vendors right up to 5 star fine dining such as JoĆ«l Robuchon and everything in between. Also ate at Mugaritz in Errenteria, Spain and Gordon Ramsays’ Chelsea restaurant. Delicious!

I have seen quite a bit of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations (I loved the Venice episode because I know most of the places he ate at) but I don’t know of Parts Unknown on CNN.

Now I am enjoying Only Murders in the Building

@cat.tails Oh gotcha! Yeah I loved season 2 of the bear better. It’s nice when tv shows are filmed in places you’re familiar with or have been to many times.
I’ve been to all the other restaurants they mentioned in season 2. One of the pizza places they went to ā€œPizza Loboā€ is just a 10 minute walk from me and the co-owners live at the end of the block from us.
My favorite episode from No Reservations is the Mexico City one. I love Mexican food, so the last time I was there I made it my mission to visit every place he went to there.

Only Murders in the Building is one of my favorites. Just started watching the latest season.

Also watching latest season of The Witcher. I’ve been fighting a cold virus for a few days so I’ve spent a lot of time at home with nothing else to do but catching up on tv shows.

Just finished watching James Martin’s French Adventure on SBS here in Australia. Not really into French cooking but seeing France through his eyes over 20 x 1 hour long episodes was amazing!

Same! I had put off this show for awhile because it didn’t seem that interesting to me and season two was some of the most powerful television i’ve ever seen. There’s so much going on in this show that is so much more than just food…but it also gives a really interesting insight into what it’s like working in the service industry. For those of us that spent years of our lives working in the service industry The Bear, for me, has felt cathartic.
