My recent post about moving into the American sitter market without a car has many constructive responses. Our daughter will be studying on Long Island next year and we would love to find a local homeowner who needs a sitter. We are not registered as homeowners. Is there any way I can find such homeowners or alert them to our availability?
@Rosemary if you change your location on your profile to Long Island , you will come up when an owner does a search of sitters ( as local ones come up at the top of a search )
Other than that make a saved search so that you are notified for any new listings that are posted in that area.
All the best .
Like someone said above, the best thing you can do is change your location. The best bet would be the town in which she is studying.
One thing I wanted to add was to be explicit in your profileāprobably right at the top of the āexperienceā sectionā since that is what hosts will see firstāthat you want to do sits in that area.
The reason I mention this is because the sitter location feature isnāt usually very helpful for hosts in that many people list where they are from, but they arenāt necessarily looking to sit locally, so private invites often arenāt successful. If someone does happen to be looking through profiles and sees you are actually interested in sitting there, that could increase the chances of them contacting you.
And depending on where in Long Island she will be, there are parts of Brooklyn and Queens in particular that arenāt very far at all (geographically they are actually part of Long Island but this term refers to the areas of Nassau and Suffolk counties), and you can use public transport from NYC to Long Island in the form of the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road)
Hi KC1102. I have changed our location to Cold Spring Harbor. Now, per your suggestion, I will add a specific note about this at the top of our listing. It will be interesting to see what, if anything comes of this. Thank you!
Thanks, Silversitters. I have done this and will be interested to see if anything comes of our listing.
A couple of other ideas:
Sabbatical homes dot com is interesting, and some of these homes may be available for housesitting. Negotiable.
Estatejobs dot com is intriguing. Short term ājobsā may not be available, but you never know! You have a lot to offer! You might get in touch with the owner of this company.

@Rosemary Cold Spring Harbor is a tiny town and its main station is well-served by the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) Huntington/Port Jefferson line. Also look for sits in Syosset and Huntington, which are on either side of Cold Spring Harbor and accessible by train. Iāve seen a few sits in Huntington, also in Nortport, which is another two stations to the east. If you stay near that train line you should be pretty good.
Obviously, thatās where Iām from.
Thank you for this reminder @PVGemini. I had forgotten about SabbaticalHomes and didnāt know about EstateJobs. I like your thinking and appreciate your sharing this with me. Cheers Rosemary
Thanks Edith. Iāll add a rail map to my search and use something like Rome2Rio.com too
