What did you do this weekend?

Hello everyone!

Hope everyone had a good weekend! I’d love to hear one positive moment from yours… big or small.

That could be a:

Great pet sit
Lovely walk
Funny or heart-melting pet moment
Well-earned rest and recharge time

Feel free to share a short story, a highlight, or a photo! It’s nice to catch up and celebrate the little wins together.

To kick things off, I wanted to share a photo of my friend’s new dog, Fae. She’s recently joined my friend’s family after being rescued from a rescue centre. She’s good as gold and incredibly sweet - I look forward to seeing how she flourishes in her new home.

Yesterday we took her for a countryside walk, and gave Fae her first pup cup, but she wasn’t very impressed with the pup cup! She loved the walk though, and sniffed at absolutely everything.

I spent time at my beach across the road yesterday. Went for a swim, combed the beach for shells, collected some cut dried long grass to try weaving a basket with. It was spectacular summer weather, clwar blue sky, 28 degrees & lower humidity than normal. Like the saying says, Queensland… beautiful one day, perfect the next (as long as we forget about our cyclones, bush fires, droughts and floods every year!)

I took the dogs I am sitting to a county park down the road, recommended by HOs. It was awful. We didn’t know the trails, so we took this one, away from the zoo and playground stuff, being a Sunday. It was rocky, hilly and narrow and a favorite of weekend mountain bikers. It was an awful hike. Sunny, very hot, with several dozen mountain bikers going full speed at us, then trying to stop, dogs freaking out. The HOs said they usually stay around the grassy areas down below – contrary to the comments about the 8-10 mile hikes they take…But I got the hot tub and pool after to recover. So all good.

I wrapped a repeat sit this past weekend, with hosts I met on THS, but who didn’t renew. Three quirky, lovable cats. I already miss them.

The hosts had paid for my ticket, as they had previously offered for me to repeat sit before as well. They let me choose the flights and I had picked serendipitously well, as it turns out, because I was able to squeeze in a visit to a third museum before leaving San Francisco late in the day. That worked out timing wise, because a few museums had had unexpected closure days during my sit, for private events and such.

I enjoy sitting in San Francisco partly because of the museums, so I was happy to catch the temporary exhibits I’d hoped to see. They’ll be gone before I visit the city again. (I especially recommend the Legion of Honor if you’re interested in San Francisco museums, because of its collections and shows, as well as gorgeous grounds amid Lincoln Park. Among other works, it has a sizable permanent collection of Rodin pieces.)

Plus, on my last day I was able to get lunch at a Chinese restaurant that’s been popular for decades, one I enjoyed frequently when I previously worked in the Bay Area. The hosts’ home is blocks from loads of amenities, including many restaurants and shops.

And the night before, I had dinner at a friend’s home nearby. We had a great time catching up and I got to better know her newish partner and their pack of charming pets. (Coincidentally, she’d recently hosted her first sit via THS, which she’d joined on my recommendation.) She made a new recipe that turned out to be tasty, which I’ll ask my husband to make as well, since he cooks for us.

My friends and I also enjoyed a dozen cake slices I’d bought from an Italian bakery that’s been around for ages, one I have fond memories of from time spent in San Francisco as a kid. We always used to get family birthday cakes there, so it reminds me of my late grandparents. And now DoorDash delivers from there, so no need to stand in lines.

I took a bunch of Waymos while in San Francisco. I love the convenience of self-driving cars and hope they’ll become widespread by the time I’m too old to drive.

When I got home, my dog welcomed me like I’d disappeared for ages. Plus, I made him happy with a new toy from San Francisco. It came from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, another favorite of mine.

I also recommend the de Young Museum, which is in beautiful, sprawling Golden Gate Park. The de Young has a tower with incredible views of San Francisco. It’s also next to a lovely Japanese garden.

I met up with a family with 3 Labradors who want to book me for 10 nights in August - a paid sit via another platform. I wasn’t sure if I could handle 3 Labs on my own but, having met them and gone for walks straight from the house I’m confident I can. I then did my first paid sit, an evening looking after a lovely Cockerpoo.

One positive is it’s stopped raining long enough for me to go up the Allotment and check on things before setting off for a doggy sit. This photo helped secure me a local summer sit for an elderly cat but mainly to keep an eye on a very large garden that features in the local Open Gardens programme. No gardening required as automatic watering, just an experienced eye.

It’s been lovely to hear what everyone’s been up to - feel free to pop back any time with what you’ve been up to at the weekend!

@Crookie your weekend sounds wonderful - do you have a particular technique for weaving? That sounds like something I’d love to try!

@Huronbase I’m so glad you had the hot tub and pool to recover in afterwards, that sounds chaotic!

Can I just say that once you’re retired, every day is a weekend! It’s something that took us a while to get used to. These days we travel midweek as it’s cheaper or we go to events mid afternoon again it’s cheaper and easier . We go food shopping in the evening around 7pm as it’s very quiet then…the only thing we do on weekends now as a regular thing is football although Brighton isn’t doing too well atm.

@Jenny last year I was fortunate to go on a small ship cruise to remote indigenous communities and art galleries in norther Australia. I was taught indigenous basket weaving by an Aboriginal elder, with pandanus leaf she gathered and hand dyed (in the top 2 photos below). I fell in love with this slow mindful creative activity.

I have been honing my weaving skills using raffia (bottom photo) as the pandanus is very expensive to buy. I saw the dune grass and want to give it a go.

We sat for a lovely family in Brighton and they let us use their season tickets while they were away. We saw Brighton play both Manchester sides. What amazed me was that the opposing fans were on the same trains to the ground as the home fans and not segregated. Didn’t see any trouble but the banter was interesting :joy:

That’s true of nearly all games as Brighton is very popular with other away fans. There’s one exception and that’s when we play Crystal Palace (our arch enemies due to something that happened 2 decades ago at a Boxing Day match :face_with_spiral_eyes:). Here’s how it is at those matches both home and away!
