Why do sitters apply to listings and then disappear?!

As a homeowner that has used THS A few times, I’m baffled why people respond to a listing??! Then they disappear… Or as it seems messages are still unread. Am I missing something, to me it doesn’t make sense and a waste of time !!

Hi @MnEm my understanding from a forum post is that if someone reads the message via the app on their phone, it does not show as read on the website. It may therefore show as unread but actually have been read. However, in my case as a sitter, even if I read a message on my phone, I almost always go to my laptop to write my response. As to why an applicant may seemingly ‘disappear’, there’s no way of knowing why that might happen.

@Snowbird I learned something new today. Thanks! I didn’t know that messages continue to show “unread” if we read them in the app.

@BunnyCat I am gobsmacked!!!
Very happy to be one of the 2 that responded & look forward to seeing you in the summer.
I feel the need to apologise to sitters who aren’t being responded to by HO🙈 for me it’s just good manners to respond to anyone has contacted you & good manners cost nothing!

Hi @Snowbird , thanks for explanation. However, maybe I wasn’t clear in my post but I was merely referring to applicants showing interest for house sitting on a listing. But I anticipate the same would apply

It maybe a systems problem but personally when I make applications, I give the owner a week to acknowledge or respond and if they don’t I make a note and archive the message

I wonder if sitters apply on a listing that’s appealing but then decide to check out plane flights and gather more info and then change their mind. If I see a desirable sit the first thing I do is check out plane flights. I also check to see what the weather conditions are for the time of year. Could be various factors why sitters change their mind.

That may well be but as a HO, in my personal opinion sitters should do their homework beforehand. If they don"t and realise the sit is not for them then it is only common curtesy to let HO know !

@Willexcell totally agree! But in my case I even sent him a message on the phone with the number they provided me and still nothing.

yes I have had that with a few, and my messages to them seem to be unread…
