You've already applied on this sit

Thank you @Silversitters for your prompt response.
Hopefully she gets back to me as quickly!
Very unusual to receive an acceptance without a message but as there are glitches I will give her the benefit of the doubt.

We too applied for a sit yesterday morning and were able to monitor how many others applied- we were 2nd- but we saw it go to 3, then 4 and then reveiwing- all within a couple of hours
What I’ve discovered is that on my own profile i see- only ‘already applied’ but if I go back on the search (as if looking anew) I see that sit but this time with ‘already applied/2 applicants…’
That was the case yesterday. We always favourite sits we apply for- no idea if that makes any difference to how its viewed.
Anyway up to yesterday at least I’ve always been able to monitor the applicant count…

Thank you for your input @Lokstar - I tried that as well and no joy. I hadn’t marked it as a favourite but will try that.

Hello everyone,

After checking in with the Product team I can confirm that the change was made to show that the user has already applied to the sit.

The change was made because, with the current inbox, you can apply to a sit multiple times, and therefore we wanted to ensure sitters couldn’t apply more than once in error.

We’ve also updated this on the owner side, telling them if the user has already applied as part of the invite flow or if they already have a sit confirmed. This brings things in line with the app.

We understand you may want to know how many other sitters have applied after applying. We’ll keep an eye on demand for this, which we can consider for the future.

Hey @Amparo, good plan to just travel with your phone. Last trip in 2023, I was in such a rush trying to get off the London bus from Heathrow, I left my laptop/kindle/Jabra earphones/all my charges in the bus. All relatively new. I tried for days to find them and did everything I could but someone on the bus wanted them more than me :sob::sob::sob: I swore never to carry anymore than one bag again and this trip I am basically doing carry-on for a year. I had to buy all that stuff again, now the laptop stays in its cozy little home in Oz and my phone is my best friend  Less is definitely more when travelling long term. And yes, sometimes I will bounce between app and web but I just find the app works perfectly for me. :heartbeat:

@ Jenny, before the automatic pausing after 5 applications was introduced, sitters could only see a range of numbers in relation to applications received e.g 0-3, 4-7 up to 50+. THS introduced putting the exact number of applications received in response to the 5 application pausing so that sitters knew the exact situation re a particular listing. This is now going back on that. Yes, I know I have applied for a sit (I don’t need THS to tell me!) but knowing how many others have and when/if it’s going to go to 5 is important. As the Product team have just removed this option, they can surely reinstate it!

Definitely. I choose, however, to bring less “other stuff”, leaving my electronics and camera gear pretty much intact. As a result, I’m traveling long-term with no more than half a carry-on of (mostly) summer clothes and a very limited selection of travel-sized toiletries.
p.s. I once started with a full size suitcase and a backpack. It took a while to downsize

@Jenny Why would THS remove the ability for sitters to see how many others have applied?? Makes no sense at all. Just one more unnecessary restriction.:flushed:

That does not work for me in the web interface. But in the app I get this:

And that one applicant is me. Good to know when I will talk to the HO later today! (Their sitter had canceled, with good reason.)

@pietkuip Yes- get the same- see my comment above to @Twitcher My response was to Jenny who says that facility has been removed!

Thank you for bringing up this topic Globetrotter. I came to the forum today, to question why this was happening, and found you have posed the question five days ago.

WHY do I find it SO intensely annoying that I cannot see how many other applicants there are??? I don’t know, but I do feel very frustrated about it.

Happily, I have now discovered that if I use the app on my phone, as opposed to my iPad, , I can indeed see how many other applicants there are for the sit I’ve just applied for. I hope this facility remains. But with all this jiggling around of the website, I’m not too hopeful.

Glad to see the Community Manager is on here reading comments. Speak up all !

Hi @temba

“but knowing how many others have and when/if it’s going to go to 5 is important.”

I feel like I need to start with not looking to start a fury but really trying to understand others perspective.
Why is this important?
For me the only thing that is important is can I apply? It’s simply, I’m in or I’m out.
I am not interested in creating more stress or worrying about what I have no control over, other applicants.
If I’m in and it goes to reviewing, ok.
If I’m out, ok.
If I’m in and I haven’t heard back, ok.
I just move along and keep my peace.

An emotional response to this change could be down to the ‘gamification’ process gradually seeping into all of our lives. It’s insidious and not always recognised. Examples include eBay telling you that you’ve ‘won’ an item you bid on. Instagram is all about how many followers you have, YouTube is all about subscribers and likes… many previously purely functional Apps now have gamification hidden in plain sight processes included as this boosts engagement. My son writes AI for a living.

Apart from the obvious one (people simply want to know the number of applicants), the most important (and infuriating) thing for me is the fact that once again, an appreciated feature is discontinued without any information or explanation, while the hated ones are set in stone.
Why waste time “fixing” things that work instead of investing that time in fixing reported things that do not work?

Definitely good approach … hmmm, in other circumstances

Thanks @pietkuip - I definitely don’t see that in the app.

@anon47943759 I started this trip with just summer clothes, you know how hot it is in Vietnam  But though I researched temps in Europe, I wasn’t expecting to hear it is still snowing in some parts and definitely winter weather in others so my luggage is basically summer and I am NOT prepared! I land in Frankfurt in a few days, certainly going to get some looks when I turn up in my shorts and flip flops  H & M first stop :joy: I have downsized all toiletries to nearly zero also. I’m sure there are stores in Europe if I run short

@Jenny I wholeheartedly agree with everything @temba has said.

We know if we have already applied for a sit! I can only imagine that a duplicate application would be the result of an accidental click on a button without realising, sitter using a bot to apply, or perhaps an inexperienced new member clicking on every appealing sit and typing “pick me!” without reading the listing or composing a personalised application. The addition of a few words on the screen is unlikely to do anything to prevent a second application in any of these scenarios.

Meanwhile, why would the new inbox allow you to apply twice to the same sit? It sounds as if existing, useful functionality is being removed to attempt to work around a coding error?

Thanks for clarification Jenny but I also have the same opinion as Temba and Lokstar that this makes no sense. As sitters we have to remember to arrive at a sit on time and homeowners need to be prepared when their sitters arrive. In other words, we are responsible adults on here. I don’t think we need to be “reminded” that we’ve applied on a sit! I do like the function where a sitter cannot apply on multiple sits - I understand why that is needed but not this.

Hi @Jenny
How are you going to keep an eye on demand?
Like most others on this thread, I would like to see how many other applicants there are

I think that is those bots doing such things. So some HOs complained, and then THS can take action.

As a person, I still have a working memory.

What I would like though is the possibility to “unfavourite” listings that I looked at and do not need to see again. That is something other sitters have asked for too. For a long time. But that is just us sitters…
