Hi our is for a year

We have a BMO World Elite Mastercard and it provides us with up to 31 days of travel medical insurance (per trip) up to age 75. Anything over 31 days, and we purchase top up insurance through their partner, Allianz, and hubby has to answer medical questions.

I think it might be because I am the main card holder and I’m still 61, but my husband is 72 and is covered.

A few people here didn’t seem to understand my original request re insurance and talk about travel insurance with credit cards and doing a search on money supermarket which doesn’t answer my question. (@Angela_L for once you missed the point). I stated that I originally used Staysure for my backpacker type insurance but that by a certain age they would only cover for up to 90 days. It seems that’s no longer the case and you can be insured by them for over a year. This is for people in the UK btw. It’s obviously not cheap but then I think all insurance has gone up.

Thank you for the update and clarification @Smiley

I am looking for travel health insurance and would like recommendations of companies that provide such insurance. Is this something we can buy through THS?Thanks

We use Staysure (we are in the UK), we took out annual multi trip, but it only covers you for 183 days worth of travel and there is a limit on the number of days in one trip you can be away for, so we took out the additional cover for a 100 day trip. Our premium May 2022-23 was £740, the renewal came through in May 23 for an eye watering £1400!!! I have used Columbus travel before for pre existing medical conditions but they didn’t offer longer stay cover.

I use safety wing. I’m from the UK but a full time travelling digital nomad. I did quite a bit of research, you pay by the month, about £100, I’m 51 with no medical conditions. It was the best I could find. Annoyingly my husband who’s Turkish, has a global insurance policy that is less than £100 for the whole year! :joy::joy:

I’m with Staysure but am from the UK. The insurance covered me from 31/10/22-31/3/24 but after that I think the max number of days will be 180 per trip owing to my age……which does annoy me!

I’ll check out that insurance company but I’ll be 67 next time I’ll need travel insurance so it might be different to yours

We are from Australia and use Cover-More. You can get it for 12 months at a time and you can renew even when you’re not in your home country, which is helpful. The prices did increase quite a lot from 2022 to 2023…

Yipeee. The good old Post Office is offering travel insurance with health cover, any age any trip duration. Of course there is a huge premium but we got it!

Someone at last has understood over 65s don’t just sit around waiting to die.

Thanks for that information  off to have a look!

Thank goodness and about time! I’ll check it out for my next trip

I completely understand the challenges you’ve faced in finding suitable backpacker insurance, especially as a traveler over the age of 60. Many insurance companies tend to focus on younger travelers with shorter trip durations, making it difficult for older individuals pursuing extended journeys.
I recommend Friendly Global. They are known for providing coverage to individuals of various age groups, making it a great choice for travelers in their 60s and beyond.

Hi @ElsieDownie
I’m having to look into long term insurance again having recently turned 68, and wonder what you’ve found. I was able to cover myself for 20 months with Staysure (I’m from the UK) up until March 2024. Despite having no underlying health conditions and being pretty fit I’m now lumped in with others who clearly aren’t healthy/fit! So far I can only get insurance for a maximum of 100 days.
Edited: apologies, I’ve just read that you found insurance with the Post Office….are you still with them? I’ll check them out. Just checked out the Post Office and for their Backpackers’ insurance you have to be under 61, their annual insurance limits trips to 31 days. Presumably that’s changed since you took it out then?

Hey Smiley, I also travel full-time as you do and have found the same issue. I used Safetywing for a while but I don’t think it’s the best option, and also isn’t particularly cheap. I’m following this thread with interest!

We have just made contact with Grenzenlos Sicher - it’s a company that provides quotes from 5 providers - for international health insurance, specifically tailored to nomads. Quite hopeful this will work out.

The risk of having to cash out for senior citizens are higher, and if something happens the probability of really high expenses is also higher. A young person break a leg, a senior get a heart atrack, kind of. So of course the insurance will be more expensive as it is a matter of math.

The terms can vary. What I know some seniors do - depending on country and terms ofc - is that they have a home/ home country and return there. I think here it is common with terms of travel up to 90 days, so they «check in» and then go on the road again. I’ve even heard people just land on the airport, grab a coffee and check in to next outbound flight - terms met - and they have calculated that that is still cheaper than a long time plan.
