Unsafe/creepy homeowners - reported to THS with no results

Agreed. It is our hope that THS may contact prior housesitters to identify any behavioral trends … but only if a formal Member Dispute is initiated.

@Jenny

The latest advertisements that THS has proudly promoted rely heavily on double entendres and sexual innuendos.

It is therefore particularly concerning that when a serious complaint was raised about an intoxicated host making unwanted sexual and aggressively inappropriate comments to their sitter , the initial response from Member Services did not appear to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserved—until it was raised publicly in the forum.

THS needs to do far better in training its staff to recognise, respond to, and address unacceptable behaviour appropriately and consistently.

@Jenny please feed back each and every comment to MS that describes how inappropriate the latest video is .

This is a really great point and something that came up when I posted this situation on the THS reddit forum. THS need to keep the platform as clean and professional as possible because we can’t just assume that everyone will understand those ads to be a “joke” and not take them literally.

I strongly doubt the OP is lying. I also strongly doubt that THS has the reach or resources to investigate these kinds of situations adequately to justify removing a member. Without adequate investigation, lying in retaliation is a not rare behavior and absolutely does offer a perceived benefit to an aggrieved party. Again I strongly doubt that is the case here. I only doubt that THS can respond forcefully to unsubstantiated accusations.

I hear ya. That’s why it is so important for the OP to address the issue in their review. No one wants a tragedy because THS won’t address a potentially dangerous HO. Maybe something simple in the review like, “not recommended for solo women sitters”.

I don’t know. I have two daughters and stories like this scare me, so my instinctual reaction is - Get the F----!

I agree entirely. The “trick” is to not turn the review into a he-said she-said. Thus my recommendation to

If that didn’t send future sitters on down the road, the sitter’s parents should be scared.

I don’t understand why you’d bring up the sitter’s parents?

She’s an adult, in her late-20s.

I’m glad you left. Your safety is the most important thing.

I do hope that you told this same story in your review to warm future female sitters.

You absolutely must be explicit with your review.

As a woman who occasionally sits solo, thr thought that a previous sitter didnt leave an accurate review of a potentially unsafe situation is very worrying for me.

You can be honest about the good parts, while stating explicitly, ‘as a solo female i did not feel comfortable once they returned. I wouldnt reccomend this sit for solo sitters’.

I am not viewing this as a question of what someone deserves. It’s easy to connect accounts to real world identities. Calling someone’s behavior out publicly can have consequences that can go beyond the site. In this case there is plenty of evidence alcohol is involved, but what in cases where the evidence is more ambiguous and the behavior could have resulted from a medication or combo of medication and alcohol? What of unforeseen consequences of public disclosures?

It’s not just this case, but I’ve seen other issues come up on forums where it seems that there really should be a way or privately reporting “issues of concern not mentioned explicitly in public reviews.” The examples I’m thinking of all raised in the forum here or other places include:

-- a sitter with body odor so severe that the homeowner wasn’t sure what to do about her mattress.

-- drug paraphenila found in the home after the review was written. Does that go on a response??? What if neither party left reviews?

-- some kind of personal disclosure made by the other person that was worrisome.

To me the important issue isn’t whether or not the homeowner is “called out” publicly. The important issue is that the homeowners hould not be hosting anymore.

Airbnb and Uber for examples are much more likely to just suspend members than is THS. Maybe that’s what needs to change.

I was referencing

As @ManifestingLemons may still be drafting her review, I’ll just mention that your suggested wording would make me think it might be a sketchy neighbourhood.

I realize that choosing the best wording can be difficult, but I just thought I’d mention my initial reaction/interpretation.

Very good point.

IIRC, it wasn’t until there was a lot of bad publicity & several court cases that AirBnB & Uber started taking any responsibility for plugging the most obvious safety holes in their platforms.

I realize I’ve had my say already, but I still think this deserves emphasis: the purpose of a detailed & truthful review isn’t punitive — it’s to warn other sitters to be wary or potentially skip the sit, for their safety & comfort.

The OP can’t anticipate what THS will do with her report, but she can at least give a heads’ up to others. Personally, I’d feel I had a moral obligation to do so.

I agree the sitter has an obligation to leave an honest review. I just don’t think that should be the only way to prevent this from happening. And it won’t be because someone will think, “This won’t happen to me.”

The sitter has already been victimized once. Now she has to share the details in what amounts to be a public accusation. Simpler, would be the company saying to the homeowners: “We take this report seriously, and can no longer support your presence on this site.”

I recognize this is not going to happen.

This is super creepy and gross, so sorry you went through this. THS absolutely needs to take things like this seriously and support sitters MORE – we are essential to this community! The platform relies on our labor to function. The new ads are absolutely disgusting. :face_vomiting:

I feel like our comments and discussions about the disturbing and creepy ads from THS being moved to « Same Community, whatever » or marketing and advertising is just to deaden and bury our concerns. Let’s keep saying it everywhere. THS is disgustingly with those ads and it endangers sitters. So inappropriate.

There is also this thread where THs adverts can be discussed

Bottom line is please warn off other solo females in any way possible and please put that you don’t recommend this sit.

Make sure the stars in your review are consistent with your words. (Don’t give 5 stars!)

I analyze every review carefully and look for between the lines clues for any hint of filth, bad pet behavior or safety.

Any innuendo that this is a bad sit should be picked up by sitters who also carefully analyze each review

Scary situation! I’m so glad you got the heck out of there!

We’ve had also in the past a situation (4 tenants in the house + very dirty + …).

We called the supportline (being recorded).

After explaining, THS said we immediately could leave and they would contact host.

I asked : do we need to do ANYTHING (like proof, pictures,…).

THS said : NO, JUST LEAVE.

But we took pictures,…

Next day … mail from THS … they asked proof, pictures, names of tenants,…

We have a PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP (insurance).

It took us weeks of mailing before they would accept our insuranceclaim.

They instantly removed the HO from THS but at first wouldn’t accept our claim …

SO THEY ADMIT IT’S AGAINST THS-RULES BUT DON’T ACCEPT THE CLAIM :face_with_peeking_eye::thinking:

So don’t give up and good luck.

SO FOR AL SITTERS … ALWAYS TAKE PICTURES, NAMES,…

And enjoy all the other sits like we are doing for more then 2 years now :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :black_cat:

(Sorry for my bad English )
