Visiting Lake Como - Italy

Lake Como has been on my bucket list for over 20 years! I have been looking for an apartment anywhere where I can catch a ferry without hiring a car. @Therese , did you stay in an apartment and did you get around on foot?
Thanks

Hi @Itchyfeet You certainly do not need a car, and certainly not on the Bellano/Lecco side of the lake, the ferry is great, and the train is brilliant … the train goes directly to and from Milano (stopping at all the villages on the way) and it will also take you to a point, at the foot of the Alps going the other way.
With regards to apartments/airbnb’s always do a search on the walk from the ferry, as many are up the hill and walking back and forth in the blazing sun is not so nice. I was about a 15 min walk down, which is easy and even back (but in the heat of the day, not such fun), so do take that into consideration when looking. I did a lot of walking which was really lovely.

Enjoy planning your trip. I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time.

@Therese Beautiful photos thank you for sharing.

We both love Lake Como. Here are a few photos from our last trip there.

The above images are from our trip out on Lake Como with Luca from Taxi Boat Varenna, you can hire him to take you out for as long as you want on his private Venetian Water Taxi. He is very knowledgeable of the surrounding area and we were very impressed with his handling of the situation when a sudden storm hit, which can happen often here and can catch people unawares.

The above photo shows how the visibility fell from being a beautiful sunny day out on the water to the thunder clouds rolling in over the mountains from the West. This took literally less than 15 minutes, but Luca, being a local boatman, saw the impending storm, prepared the boat accordingly and headed for a lee shore on the opposite side of the peninsula to the village of Bellagio. Only when conditions improved did he head out back to Varenna.

For anyone wondering about using a car there or driving your own car down and getting around, we took our car, as shown in the photo above, and it was very easy to go from place to place. This was taken on the car ferry from Varenna to Menaggio and it certainly cuts down on journey time for when you want to travel by car from one side of Lake Como to the other!

This was a view during an early evening meal in Varenna, I managed to get this shot just as the lightning struck!

Some more evening sky images taken from Varenna along with a day time artistic shot!

The photo above of Villa La Gaeta (the James Bond Villa) is located next to Lake Como, near San Siro and Menaggio. It is surrounded by a beautiful park with paths, benches and a lit fountain. In the Spring of 2006, the movie Casino Royale was filmed in front of this villa (the last scene of the movie when Bond shoots and meets Mr White, and utters the famous words, “Bond… James Bond.”

We hired the boat as pictured above in order to take the beautiful photos of Villa La Gaeta and the other beautiful buildings and sights around Lake Como.

Pictured above is the beautiful Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, it is one of the most prestigious historic hotels in the area, and the only 5 star luxury hotel in Bellagio, the best-loved village around Lake Como. It is also a great spot to sip your cocktails and watch the world go by at sunset!

If anyone is thinking of visiting Lake Como then you will most certainly love it there
