@MaggieUU I just watch Dying for … I liked it too.
Saw 2 very good documentaries - kind of US centric and documentaries so they may not be ‘coming to a theater near you.’
Lilly, the story of Lilly Ledbetter, a Goodyear Tire factory worker who fought the battle for equal pay for women. She lost her own battle but her fight led to the passage of Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009.
Secret Mall Apartment, the story of artist/activist Michael Townsend and 7 friends who create an apartment in a ‘hidden’ space in the Providence, RI mall.
These sound really interesting @toml - particularly Secret Mall Apartment! I’ll need to see if I’m able to find them online.
Currently watching The Bombing of Pan Am 103 on BBC iPlayer. It’s a six-part factual drama based on the real events surrounding the Lockerbie disaster and the international investigation to find those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
Sam if you found that interesting this article came out yesterday (it may be paywalled) was a moving discussion of the investigation written by the son of one of the people who were killed onboard flight 103.
My Father Prosecuted History’s Crimes. Then He Died in One.
@Sam, When I was in grad school at Rutgers University, New Brunswick in the 1990s, a friend and I saw a curious sculpture installation on the campus from a distance. Up close it was powerful and heart wrenching and left an indelible impression.
Dark Elegy was a collection of larger than life-size figures of the mothers and wives of the victims of the PanAm 103 tragedy, each one assuming a pose of grief, clutching some meaningful object. It was created by Suze Lowestein, a sculptor whose 21 year old son was one of the 35 Syracuse University students on that plane. Sometime afterward I heard her interviewed about it. It now resides in Montauk, NY. If you ever have the opportunity to see this, you won’t forget it.
@PNW , thank you for posting NYTimes article. I have an account and will read it.
Thank you @PNW and I will have a read of this article.
@Maeve This is really interesting, thank you and I will be sure to visit next time I’m in the area.
Bad Shabbos, a laugh-out-loud film about a family shabbos dinner gone crazy. You don’t have to Jewish to laugh. I don’t think its in wide release yet - somehow the indie theater in Asheville is screening it.
Clarkson’s Farm 4 on Prime Video. This latest series sees Jeremy Clarkson shining the spotlight once again on genuinely fascinating, interesting and important areas of farming. It also sees him searching for a pub in the local area for his new venture.
currently on a sit in France, and was wanting to brush up on my French… luckily, this HO owns the entire boxset of Friends in French!
Side note: I was curious how the French version would handle that episode where Joey tries to speak French… turns out in this version that they have him learning Spanish!
Just watched Blue - The Life and Art of George Rodrigue (2024), a documentary bio of the Louisiana Cajun artist George Rodrigue who created Blue Dog.
This was the first blue dog, not quite blue yet.
And this is a later painting.
Available until July 29, 2025 on PBS.ORG or on the PBS app.
I’m currently watching series 3 of The Chelsea Detective on Sky’s U&Drama channel. This British crime drama focuses on various murder cases which take place in Chelsea, London and the efforts of Detective Inspector Max Arnold and his partner to solve the crimes.
I had a quiet weekend on the sofa, and managed to get through Killing Eve, which has been around for a while but which I hadn’t seen before. It was absolutely brilliant!
What’s everyone’s recommendations at the moment?
I have a library hold on season 1 of The Chelsea Detective as recommended by @Sam_F. I love that UK series are so short. This one is only 4 episodes so I have minimal guilt about binging it.
I recommend Long way Home on Apple TV+ starring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. In this, their most recent series, they ride their refurbished vintage bikes from McGregor’s Scottish home to Boorman’s in England, taking a circuitous route through Northern Europe and the continent before reaching their destination. I just watched the episode where they temporarily abandon their bikes to fly to Svalbard, an archipelago in the Arctic, all I can say is this is definitely on my list of places to visit!
I haven’t seen the previous 3 seasons of their “Long Way” series yet, which includes “Long Way Round”, “Long Way Down”, and “Long Way Up”. Long Way Round is where the pair rode from London to New York, Long Way Down is when they rode from John o’ Groats in Scotland to Cape Town in South Africa and Long Way Up is when they rode from Ushuaia in Argentina through South and Central America to Los Angeles in the US. I can’t wait to watch these ones too!
Thanks Sam, I’ll have a look! I love Ewan McGregor!
@Sam_F - Long Way Home is on my AppleTV list - I really like these kinds of shows and movies.
Others that I’ve enjoyed -
Motorcycle Diaries about Che Guevara’s motorcycle trip across South America. ppv on many platforms
A new film written and directed by a friend’s son - I Don’t Understand You about a trip to Italy with a lot of mishaps (loosely based on real life but no murders). Just released in ppv on several platforms.
The Last Bus -Pensioner Tom travels the length of the UK by bus, retracing the journey he made with his late wife years before, so that he can visit his hometown and his memories one last time. Available on Prime.
Went to see Jurassic World Rebirth this afternoon - needed to get out of the house while the cleaners came (kudos to the HO for having the cleaners come shortly before the sit ends).
The movie movie is fun, but not as good as I remember Spielberg’s original.
I am a bit worried about nightmares tonight since I sitting Benny -
So do I. Now that I am in England, I will watch lots of them while I pet two gorgeous Cockapoos.
