@home, as full-time international housesitters with no checked suitcases then we alas lack capacity for many purchases after each housesit. But we do keep track of items in some housesit properties that strike us as excellent and potentially useful to us at a future date. But, on the flipside, we have discarded various unused possessions and streamlined many aspects of our travel stuff (e.g. tech cables, toiletries).
An extra full sized vacuum cleaner - one for upstairs and the other for downstairs - like @hellocat - how on earth have I managed all my adult life lugging a heavy vacuum about
We don’t spend a lot on stuff - we still have the very first Dyson invented in the dark ages - its very heavy
Yes, my Dyson was from the dark ages too! So heavy! I’ve got rid of it now. When I see those big heavy Dysons on sits my heart sinks! The modern ones make it so easy to scoot around. Anything for an easier life!
A IKEA cheese grater where you grate the cheese right into the container and the container has a lid for storing.
Carote cookware. When I went to buy it I saw that there is a line with removable handles. I live in a camper van. It was perfect.
If I had a house I’d buy a robot vacuum. I was skeptical of them at first but now I think they are brilliant. Also a cordless electric vacuum. I hate vacuuming and these devices make it so much easier.
It’s one of my questions at video call. If the answer is no and I’m travelling by car I bring my own. I thought a combined microwave was the ultimate but now air fryer all the way.
I had a lightweight bathrobe for about 25 years. One of my hosts provided a thick, plush bathrobe for my use in her house, which I loved! I asked for one the next Christmas and now not only wear it at home during the cold months but bring it with me on all my house sits - and the cats love snuggling up on me while I’m wearing it!
Another one here who wants to get an air fryer! They’re so handy, especially for making small meals. I was also spoiled by fancy coffee machines two sits in a row– I’m trying to make do with a portable milk frother but it’s not the same. I miss pushing a button and making a flat white!
One day when we eventually ‘settle’!! I will buy a lightweight cordless vacuum cleaner. Every time I come across one on a sit I’m relieved as the vacuuming will be quick and easy! We did a long 6 week cat sit last winter in Malaysia where the host wanted us to vacuum every day, like she did, because of all the cat hair. It was the heaviest, most cumbersome, vacuum I’ve ever used and it was a two story house! It was a real workout each time I used it- I hated vacuuming there so compromised on every second day (which was really needed!) But every day was just too much! Cordless vacuums all the way!
If you mean based on stuff I see in other people’s houses when I sit:
– A battery operated automatic bathroom bin which I thought was both attractive and practical because you could just wave a hand or foot to open it and have no physical contact at all. It lasted less than 2 months and then I read the reviews full of complaints that it stopped working after two months and I got a better one with a simple foot pedal and no battery!
– A scratching surface you can attach to the side of a couch or chair. (My cats still prefer the sides without the “special” surface unfortunately!
As a host I’ve made several purchases not because I saw the stuff in other people’s homes but because I realized how much nicer they’d make things for guests, but that’s another thread! I’ve also made a few purchases as a sitter based on stuff I want to have in case the owner’s don’t.
After two sits with two Goldens each, in which the homes had old, heavy, corded vacs that were not very effective, I bought and now bring a lightweight cordless vacuum on sits I drive to!
Ditto an air fryer! We don’t have an oven in our tiny home in France, so this is the perfect alternative. Love how stepping into someone else’s life inspires “tweaks” in your own
