Mistaken review score

For the second time running I have received a one star review when the owner clearly intended a more generous review. How often does this happen?

See Help! HO gave overall one star review by mistake - #2 by Silversitters

More often than you might think. It seems when you use a cell phone and go through it quickly, it can happen. I think there should be at least a few minutes to edit the review after published.

I actually believe there should be a “this is your review, do you want to make it official, please double-check” thing in between.

@Gornalian it Seems to happen a lot - THS have been saying it’s user error but the code doesn’t work on all applications, so some people can’t even see any stars !!

@Jenny can you ask the tech team to look into issue this again - it is happening way to often for it to be simply user error and as @Lauraa reported on the forum the stars aren’t visible at all on some applications ( MacBook Air and Chrome )

Why doesn’t a community manager step in here? Invisible stars, wrong ratings because of programming - yes it’s bank holiday now but it wasn’t these past days.

It is simply really bad UI/UX without proper testing.

It’s also ridiculous that the system allows an overall rating contradicting the average of category ratings.

There could be more than one meaning interpreted into the overall rating:

  • as a conclusion to the individual ratings (calculate it then!)
  • as, independent of and despite all the other stuff, a rating of whether you liked the sit or not
  • … (insert more intepretations)

I know, and I’m not saying the overall rating should be a mathematical calculation of the average. Although I wouldn’t mind, not making it mathematical allows for consideration of other categories that may not be included like communication for sitters or reliability and organization for owners. What I meant is that there should be some limit and the system should not let a general 1 star if all the categories are 5 and that happens without even a warning.
I also think like others (and have already said) that a less that 5 star rating in any category should open a compulsory window to be filled explaining what can be improved.

I am still hoping that the owner contacts the website. I even have his agreement, worded in a WhatsApp message, to give me an overall score of 5 stars. But of course he needs to go to the trouble of contacting the website. What’s more, he is elderly and does not strike me as particularly good with computers.
If he doesn’t see through on his promise, I shall ask TrustedHousesitters to simply delete his review of me and my review of him. I don’t know whether that has ever been done before.
It seem peculiar that it’s the sitter who bears the burden of an error, albeit an innocent one, on the part of the owner. If there has to be a default setting then it would be better if it were zero stars or, dare I suggest, five stars, since that seems to be what most people end up with anyway.

They won’t do that but they can fix it. Get in touch with them, send them the message as proof and tell them he’s elderly and it may not be easy for him to manage it.
This happened to me and they got in touch with the owner to check that she agreed to change the review. It was done very quickly. I did wait for quite a while to see if the owner got her computer fixed but once I contacted THS, it was fixed in a few hours.

@Gornalian The WhatsApp message should be sufficient for THS to change it for you. Someone else on the forum was able to do that .

From reading other reviews of things here and there, I’m often surprised by how many people actually think 1 star is the top rating. As in “number one”, “first place”, etc.
At least it sounds like you’re in touch with the HO to sort out whether he thought that or it was an accident.
