Hello. Brand new with THS. After I joined I realized maybe this is not an option. Are there any sitters who have a pet that have house/pet sat taking their pet with them. It didn’t dawn on me that this may not be allowed or a deterrent. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you in advanced.
If you use the magnifying glass and search the key words ‘bringing pets’ you’ll see the previous posts addressing your question.
Hi. I have 4 cats and I had a lady sit for me who brought a small dog with her. The dog was as good as gold but my 4 cats are not used to dogs and all vanished. So much depends on whether the animals in question are compatible. It took a while and a lot of washing to get rid of the smell of the dog.
Hello @Tracy2 and a very warm welcome to the Community Forum
I have attached a link and a thread on this subject that you should find helpful
I have also attached this blog below which tells the story of Chia who was rescued off the streets of Mexico by Danielle and Brodin back in 2018. Fast-forward to now, Chia is living her best life as she follows her pet parents around the globe, staying in cool homes and meeting new fluffy friends as they bring her along for pet sitting adventures.
Chia enjoying her best life

@Tracy2 Hi Tracy and welcome to Trusted Housesitters.
Alas, we have cats so we ask sitters to NOT bring any other animals into our home.
Some homeowners allow it but from our experience as sitters and HOs, and reading the Forum regularly, I do not think it is common to allow sitters to bring their own animals. (I think it is easier when you’re sitting a dog(s) and want to bring your dog…?)
But do read the links that others have provided here. They will provide many perspectives.
Thank you @Samox24. Reading everything you shared was helpful. I enjoyed reading about the couple rescuing their dog. Always wonderful to hear those heartfelt stories. I also like many of their suggestions from that article. Again thank you.
Hello. Thx for your reply. I have a small dog and would not apply to cat sitting opportunities. I appreciate hearing your situation though to be more aware of potential issues such as this.
Thank you. Very helpful. I found lots of comments on this topic.
Hi @Tracy2 you are very welcome
Thank you for your reply @KenandMary1998. I agree I would not mix a cat with a dog. The replies I’ve received and all the posts I read once it was recommended to use the spyglass search feature have been super helpful. Thank you.
I am about to complete my 11th THS sit, and all have been with my two small dogs in tow. I don’t have the option to do otherwise. I have sat for three of the pet parents twice. Our “package deal” is clearly stated in my profile. We do get turned down a lot, but we’ve made wonderful friends — four-legged and two — along the way.
I bring my dog with me.
I have sat for about the last 18 months.
I get declined a lot more, but I do find sits that work for us.
Thanks @ddacey for this info. I’m heRing some great positive experiences.
That is so encouraging to hear @purplepetlover. Thank you for sharing your experience.
My partner and I are becoming full time sitters at the start of December and have sits lined up for 6 months…all with our pet tortoise!
I’ve been surprised at how happy HOs are for the tortoise to come with, but I am very upfront about the tort in my profile and applications and emphasise that I will be keeping the pets completely separate. I’ve only had one HO tell me it wouldn’t work because the dog would bark lots but she was very lovely and apologetic (though nothing to be apologetic for as I expect it not to work for some sits) and I really appreciated the honesty.
I do wonder if some of the sits I’ve been declined for have been because of the tortoise but all of the ones that have declined me have done so without communicating with me and I am absolutely fine to not get sits with uncommunicative HOs anyway
We’re currently building a new house for the tortoise that is going to be collapsible to fit better in the car. And we’re all excited for our new adventure
As a general rule, I’d say I cant accept sitters with their own pets but I would love someone bringing a tortoise!
