I’m sure many of us have a number of sits lined up for the year. Which one in particular has you really looking forward to starting?
In the middle of summer I am headed to a wonderful house, deep in the woods of the English south. The dog is an adorable rascal who I have watched grow up, my bedroom us up in the eves, among the treetops with the alarm call of the birds’ dawn chorus, and the local walks are enchanting.
I have a 2 week sit scheduled in an eastern Europe country that I’ve never visited previously. The dog, the hosts, the location and the house all seem wonderful and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going to use the sit as a spring board to take a trip by rail visiting Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, countries that are new to me.
I’m looking forward to a week’s sit in Geneva early May, with two cats. I’ll have plenty of time in the day to explore/go walking and evenings snuggled up with the cats! The sit is on my return journey after travelling by train to Linz in Austria, (6 nights), via Cologne and Nuremberg (4 nights in each) then back by train to Geneva, following 3 nights in Munich and back home after Geneva. Very excited!
I have a sit set in NYC, with cats, in a river view high-rise.
The hosts seem gracious and volunteered to leave me their museum passes. (I visit NYC for museums and food. Having been there many times, I don’t sightsee any more.)
Given that I’m letting my THS membership expire, I’m doing only occasional sits now, ones likely to repeat off the books. And I’m picky about cities to repeat, like ones with terrific museums and food, and/or where I have lots of friends. Otherwise, I’ll be doing nonsit travel.
@Rhe, fabulous thread.
we’re currently most excited about housesits for which we have active, targeted searches but not yet found . adventure beckons . we enjoy using THS to visit new geographies and experience new cultures/people.
Its been a few years but I’ve really enjoyed my trips to the Baltics, Estonia, especially. My first trip was a 2 week Earthwatch project researching ground water polution in NE Estonia (closest geography to the ex-USSR) summer 1992. Beautiful countryside and some great lodges that we stayed in along the coast - Lahema National Park. One of the curiosities for me is that although the only meat that we ever saw was pork, although we saw many cows in pastures, but only saw 1 pig.
Occasionally there is a sit in in Riga - I’m watching it but have always been scheduled so unable to apply.
I’m really looking forward to two sits I have coming up! One is a third repeat sit for a couple who live in a resort a few hours drive North of me in a hot and sunny location. Enjoy it so much there - swimming pools, activities, dinner get togethers and a lovely little dog! My second is a trip to Dublin where I’m originally from and haven’t been back for seven years. May be my last trip back to see cousins and a remaining aunt and uncle who are still alive.
@TheEnglishFlaneur i am doing the exact same trip as you after my sit, only I’m using buses not trains - far far cheaper. May as well take advantage of already being in Eastern Europe to do those countries.
Excited about them all! Have 11 sits booked through from now to the end of August and the one I am quite excited about at the moment is on a canal boat in England. A lovely way to experience a very different way of life. With creatures!
@MaggieUU, suggest caution - vancouver is an addictive city! Depending on your interests then plenty of activities and natural beauty. At that time, we’ll be west of you - on vancouver island.
Just kidding, I’m sure he’s a fine player. Another wonderful thing about this guitar place is that the house (a big, tall victorian pile) doesn’t have close neighbours!
